acoustics: acoustic wood panels
As Stuart Weber, genius of the classical guitar was planing his "Out of the Wood" spring concert at the Emerson Cultural Center (4/16/10) he called on upon Poindexter's for help with his sound. Bill Costigan our founder is a big fan of Stuart. During the planning stages Bill approached Stuart with the idea of building custom suspended acoustical panels that would help reinforce the stage sound and "push the sound of his guitar" out into the audience. The Poindexter's staff went to work looking for interesting cost effective materials for this purpose. The "out of the wood" theme of this concert seemed to work well with this design too. The panels helped mix-up the sound of the instruments, the stage sound was enveloping and clear with the aid of 2 high quality floor monitors, this good even stage sound helps the musicians play better together as the feel confident about their sound and tone as individuals and as an ensemble.
We used a complement of Meyer Sound speakers and electronics which do a wonderful job of delivering an uncolored natural sound. The wood panels, the high-quality sound system coupled with matching DPA and AKG microphones connected to a Mellennia pre-amp rounded out our tool set. Bill Costigan tuned the system, Kevin Butler mixed the show.
The Emerson has a 200 lbs limit with their fly system so we had to rent two Gene Lifts and borrow 30' of truss from the kind folks at MSU's Brick Breeden Field house in order to suspend the 500 lbs of custom acoustic panels, Thanks Doug Brekke!
Additional thanks also to Mike Weix - the Emerson's excellent lighting technician and theater manager, Mike did a wonderful job turning the stage into a warm, inviting atmosphere with his lighting design and control. Sas, Stuart's wife said this was the best sounding show she has heard him play yet. Stuart liked the panels so much he plans to keep them for future concerts and recycle them into his practice studio. Stay tuned for a video clip of the show...
